The Attorney General of Uganda Kiryowa Kiwanuka has given guidance to the Gender Ministry to allow the coronation of Paul Sande Emolo as the third Emorimor of the Iteso Cultural Union – ICU.
The decision by the Attorney General, Kiryowa Kiwanuka follows a request by the Gender Ministry to ascertain any legal impediments to the planned coronation of Emolot after a court order that barred him and the Iteso Cultural Union Speaker John Francis Okuma from performing any roles related to the institution.
In his statement issued on October 20, 2022, Mr Kiryowa stated that there was no legal impediment to the coronation of Paul Sande Emolot by the Iteso Cultural Union.
“In regards to your request for advice on whether there are any legal impediments to the coronation of Mr Paul Sande Emolot as His Highness, The Emorimor Papa Iteso by the Iteso Cultural Union, we hereby advise as follows, it is our considered opinion that from the information availed to us, there is no legal impediment to the coronation of Mr Paul Sande Emolot by the Iteso Cultural Union,” Said Kiryowa in a statement.
He further stated that ICU is governed by the constitution of the ICU which was published in the Uganda Gazette and provides for the functioning and operation of the organs of the cultural institution.
The position of the Emorimor fell vacant upon the demise of Augustine Osuban Lemukol on February 5.
Since then two factions emerged over who should be the interim Emorimor; the house of elders led by one of the founder ICU members, William Alloch fronted prime minister Augustine Omare Okurut to spearhead the transition as interim Emorimor, who was fought by Paul Sande Emolot faction.
In protest, Mr Okurut and other cabinet ministers in the late Emorimor’s government accused Mr Emolot’s team of being uncivilized.
Mr Emolot’s faction in March appointed him the acting Emorimor, later climaxing it with his installation as Emorimor, which the other factions have challenged in the courts of law.
Emolot will be crowned on Saturday, October 22 at Soroti sports ground.
Meanwhile, several Soroti dwellers have expressed their joy with the guidance of the Attorney General noting that the crowning of Paul Sande Emolot is a sign of relief to the Ateker people.
By Press time the Soroti City RCC Peter Pex Paak had been notified about the event and was scheduled to address the press at 09:00 AM Local time.
